Worcestershire Wedding Photographer | A Coddington Vineyard Wedding

Coddington Vineyard is a working vineyard and a new to the scene wedding and events venue tucked away in the Malverns on the Worcestershire and Herefordshire border. It’s really quite special, with the vineyard and beautiful gardens creating a perfect backdrop for either a lakeside ceremony or outdoor drinks reception. For the evening meal and dancing, there’s a barn with many original features, and space to set up a marquee or tent too. Tim and Ellie chose to get married at Coddington Vineyard in mid-October, and thankfully the worst of Storm Callum held off long enough for both their ceremony and drinks reception to be held outside as planned.

The lakeside ceremony tent. Marriage laws in England require that a few lines and the register itself be said and signed under a permanent structure. Many wedding venues achieve this by having a little pagoda or folly registered for ceremonies. Tim and Ellie’s registrar was happy for the main ceremony to be held outdoors under the tent pictured above, and then for Tim, Ellie and their witnesses to step inside the barn to complete the formalities before returning for the close of the ceremony. It worked perfectly.

The barn all set up on the morning of the wedding. I really loved how atmospheric it was in there with the wind blowing outside and all the lights making it feel extra cosy and inviting.

Ellie’s beautiful wedding dress was from the French Connection bridal collection. It suited both Ellie and the venue perfectly.

I’m a big fan of colourful flowers, especially for an autumn wedding.

After the main ceremony Tim, Ellie, their mums (as witnesses) and the registrars and I headed over to the barn to complete the legal formalities including the signing of the register. As it was such a small group of us in the barn I didn’t want to be intrusive or spoil the moment with flash during their vows, but thankfully between the lovely window light streaming in from high up and the high ISO of my camera I didn’t need to.

We held off on the confetti until everyone was out from under the tent then Tim and Ellie walked through a tunnel of confetti thrown by their friends and family (I think some friends were particularly enthusiastic with their throwing!)

With 10 or 15 minutes left after we had finished the group shots and before everyone sat down for speeches and dinner, I took Tim and Ellie over to the vineyard for some photos of the two of them alone together. Look at those colours! It really was peak autumn that weekend.

The candles are lit and the barn is ready! I love long tables at weddings, and the way Tim and Ellie had decorated with simple place settings and tall candles in wine bottles was so atmospheric and seasonal. It was so cosy in the barn, even though it was quite windy and cold outside!

By the time everyone had sat down for speeches and dinner the light outside was beginning to fade, but the atmosphere in the barn was perfect with fairy lights and lots of candles. As I said above, I don’t like using direct flash as it’s a really harsh light and destroys the atmosphere that couples work so hard to create, but with yellow and brown surfaces and nothing white to bounce a flash from to make the light softer and more forgiving, I needed to get creative.

I use small, battery powered video lights when I’m filming weddings and had a couple of those tucked away in my camera bag alongside my flash and reflector in case of bad weather and low light. With one light set up to the side behind Ellie’s sisters (and bridesmaids) and the lovely light coming off the fairy lights strung up across the barn, I managed to light the evening reception without needing to throw around too much direct flash. Barns can be quite tricky for lighting and it can be tough to balance atmosphere with the need for light, so I’m always looking for creative solutions when shooting in dark spaces!

After the speeches it was time for dinner, which was provided by Pizza Project. It was fun to watch them make the pizzas in real time and then fire them in the oven as everyone lined up to be served. If you’re thinking of having a less traditional meal at your wedding, do check out Pizza Project. They make a variety of pizzas including both vegan and gluten free options. Extra bonus points: seconds and thirds! This is the stuff wedding dreams are made of!

Jason, working his magic on the dance floor! I think Coddington Vineyard might be a new favourite venue of mine for the simple reason that they have a cat. It’s a beautiful venue too, of course, but I’ve never seen a cat at a wedding before!

For their first dance, Tim and Ellie had been taking dance lessons to prepare a swing sequence to wow their guests. They were really good!
